It was posted back on Bay12. It's a crossover with some kind of grimdark anime (forgot the name already), Gantz (thank you, Firefox History search). Or supposed to be, at least.

And Gantz is bloody amazing, especially if you read it, seeing as how it was one of the many series that had an anime that was cut off after only covering a tiny bit of the story.

Yeah, I just finished the manga yesterday. I have to say, I would love to see how the ponies deal with something like Gantz. Considering that humans can only manage every mission with absolutely silly amounts of gore. One chapter has a giant dinosaur getting vertically bisected.

Alright, this popped into my head after the pet episode, which of course launched the furious debate upon how ponies would be able to reference tanks by prior knowledge.
Suppose that, around sixty, seventy years before the current, canonical show, a very WWII-esque conflict breaks out (over what, I'm not sure) between Equestria and several surrounding nations (purposefully vague to allow for the greatest amounts of artistic liberties), complete with alliances, war-related tech, spells, et cetera. Since so much of pony history is entirely unspecified, this would allow for an INSANE amount of personal customization on the author's part.

And no, I didn't research appearances of this idea before I posted. So if this is an almost verbatim copy of another's work, commence hardcore flaming.

What about WWI?

A much better war all around (if by 'better' you mean terrifyingly bloody). People tend to skim over it, but the Nazis had nothing on trench warfare. People talk about Stalingrad, Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, etc. as these horrific battles in WWII; pretty much every moment of WWI was like that. With an extra foot of mud, and mustard gas.

That's actually incredibly tempting to do.

I'd say the reason most people skim over the First World War is the fact that it involved no real tactical diversity, at least not in the Western conflicts. Battles were usually just a step-by-step process:

1) Call down an artillery barrage on enemy trenches.
2) Send out a platoon or two of infantry.
3) Watch them get mowed down by machineguns.
4) Go back to killing rats and playing cards.

Overall, World War Two was quite a bit bloodier, but most importantly to this is that it was portrayed in a far more epic fashion. World War One had mustard gas, World War Two had kamikaze fighters. World War One had trenches, World War Two had goddamn Panzerkampfwagen. And I say epic, because which one has the greatest impact on the public back home? A guy with a gun, or a five-thousand pound tank?

The end of WWI was actually quite interesting. They began to develop the very tactics and tools that WW2 was so famous for.

Still, that's discounting a good three years of trench warfare on the Western Front. Trench warfare in which, I might add, they'd fight for five or six months to move forward a mile.

And each mile gained might cost a hundred thousand soldiers.

Which is the whole point of the thing: WWI was much more representative of the true nature of war, while WWII is at least partially diluted by the moral justice thing, the relatively rapid movement, and the Team Rambo, World Police filter it gets run through in the U.S.


Besides, if I were going to pull atrocities, I'd go with the Allies deliberately targeting civilian districts of German cities over military infrastructure, the Bataan Death March, and the firebombings of Tokyo.

Ye all might want to wait until the next episode to start a fic about a war in Equestria - it seems there's going to be a little light shed on the history of Equestria's creation in it, so if there's any conflict, canon ideas can be good to use.
