And no, I don't think that the team making a retcon in this one instance was a bad thing, regardless of what sort of stupidity may or may not have caused it, because IMO the original voice was shit, and should have been changed anyways. Changes after the fact aren't always bad. And I would like to point out that "always expect the worst, and you will often be pleasantly surprised" is a rather good way to look at the world. Think about how many ways this could have been a real debacle, and then think about how we came out of it with two results: a better voice for Derpy (one that doesn't sound like an awkward 13 yo boy, to boot), and some morons over at EqD raging in the comments. Neither of those is a bad thing, and one is rather funny.


All said, I stand by my opinion that if anything is going to cause the fandom and/or the show to crash and burn, it will be the idiots in the peanut gallery, not the team that has a fairly good track record of making good choices in regards to the show, despite having to balance between pleasing us, entertaining the original target demographic, and keeping out of trouble with Hasbro.

So I'd go for "cynicism" instead of "pessimism" for the definition ya'll are discussing for "assuming the worst, hoping the best."




And really now, nothing's going to "kill" the show. Nothing like this, anyway; if Hasbro keeps pissing off writers and animators and making them quit, THAT will kill the show. Not demanding or hate filled fans.

You're thinking "kill" in terms of "get cancelled". I'm thinking "kill" in terms of "render obscure". Even if the show gets cancelled, right now, it won't do it more harm than if it ran for fifteen more seasons and got turned into the pony version of the Simpsons. In that regard, Hasbro's meddling in Studio B's affairs and not caring too much about the peripheral demographic can certainly "kill" the show. The fans' outcry is just a side effect. "As if a million voices cried out in despair and were suddenly silenced", as it were.

EDIT: Epiphany regarding the derpy thing:

I'm starting to wonder if people who are really worked up about this identify with Derpy. The internet's a rough place, where you'll get yelled at for doing any sort of mistake that's against the social norm ("newfag," "lurk more," etc). So people might be latching on to an imperfect character who makes many mistakes, and sympathize saying, "hey, I'm a misfit too."

Which is why people are taking it so seriously. If that's the case, I empathize with them more than I did previously. Still no excuse to go on a hate filled rampage insulting whoever they think is the cause of it, but I can see it taken a bit more personally than just "don't mess with my favorite character."
