Nah, not really. The whole Cheese-eating Surrender Monkeys thing is fairly recent. Napoleonic War-era France was all, "Oh hai dere England. You want some of this? Boom, just helped your colony revolt while you were busy trying to invade me!"

Hell, even through the World Wars, the French fought pretty fiercely. It's just that a combination of bad leadership and being outgunned made their attempts rather unsuccessful.

Of course, the French resistance was still pretty nasty. They managed to cause the Nazis a whole lot of hell. But it's funner to imagine the French as surrender-prone, because they're French.

Just started a little two-person succession game of DF with a friend of mine who has only just started playing.

The biggest challenge this fort will face isn't his relative inexperience, or mistakenly trying to hunt unicorns; it's the fact that I designate all constructions in multiples of 3, and he prefers multiples of 2.



I'm not sure I can handle that.

Multiply them together to get six, or pick another number that you both are not used to. Mutual discomfort will cause you both to agree on a number that one of you is comfortable with, or you will get used to the new number.

I mean that all my rooms, hallways etc., are all a number of tiles wide/long/high that are odd and divisible by 3, and he does it by multiples of 2.

Meaning that his rooms have no center tile.

I don't think you appreciate how horrible that is.

Oh, gods...only two tiles? That's going to start some pathfinding lag eventually. I am also one of those 3-tile wide designers (when sober).

I consolidate. All my bedrooms are 3 by 2. I line up furniture on one wall and then it's a straight line that allows access to all the furniture.

I usually have communal buildings. It's rare for me to have a fort have rooms for people other than whiny nobles.

When I DO have rooms for normal dwarves, they all get the basics. 2x2 room, or a 1x2 room. Example:

C = container, B= bed, X = blank.

1x2 room should be obvious. Bed and entrance.

I've been playing Planetside 2 lately (aka today). I think I'm supposed to be under a non-disclosure agreement, but I'm gonna say stuff anyway. The NC are fun, especially after shooting down a very stupid Liberator (big-ass gunship) with an unguided rocket, and scaring a magrider (hovering tank) off a cliff by shooting at it with my LMG. The TR... they're underpowered. Going toe-to-toe with an equivalent from any other force results in a swift death. I'm silently hoping to magic my way through the ranks long enough to get something half-decent to shove on a vehicle (probably a liberator) so I can actually do something other than sneak around with a big-ass gun and hope I get the first shots off.

I believe they canned that (stupid) non-disclosure agreement recently.

In other news, the drop crate entry angle on CC creates funny things, like crates tumbling down mountains and piledriving unsuspecting Whitebots down below before another is gunned down with their own weapons by a Coalition miner. The anti-aircraft drones have caused the hostile brain's dropship to crash down on the brain more than once. Fun stuff.

Yeah, I love using the drop crates as instruments of DEATH


In other news, I am now going to reap the rewards of my preorder. I now get a free copy of Civ 5, so time to begin the NEW WORLD ORDER
