So some sort of schizophrenia thing? Hehe, wacky.

My preferred theory (with plenty of unfounded assumptions) that is actually somewhere in between: NMM is a separate being, but was created by Luna's alicorn magic as she had her breakdown. So, sort of like an avatar of her negative emotions. Not necessarily even sentient; just the manifestation of Luna's jealousy and anger. So, the responsibility's still on Luna, as it's her emotions, but they're going out of control due to magical shenanigans.



What'd Past Sins do, anyway? Seems the fanon codex on this subject, from what I've read about it. Nyx is NMM's reincarnation, or something along those lines, right?

1. On the first: So basically, you think of her as a sort of magical semisentient AI?

2. As I recall, it was that NMM was an independent personality, and that Nyx was the result of a (failed) attempt to resurrect/summon NMM into a body of her own, which partially failed, ending up with her as Nyx, a foal with repressed memories of her time as NMM/in Luna's body. Memory could be wrong, though. My personal take on that is that, though NMM was an independent personality, the negative aspects of her were entirely Luna's, and so when she was reborn, she had NMM's personality, minus those negative emotions, which was basically nil. Hence why she ended up as a young filly, rather than an adult; her underdeveloped physical state reflected her underdeveloped mental and emotional state. She was either a true blank slate or very close, and her late-story personality was largely a result of Twilight's care.

Truth be told I stole the theory from Dark Cloud; in that game, one of the background story characters got emotion-powered superpowers. His wife got murdered, which naturally pissed him off, and afterward his superpowers gained a sort of sentience of their own. They later took him over and became the big bad.

'Tis an interesting way to make a "pure evil" character without the character feeling flat, as they're not really a character at all, but just a small piece of another character's personality going unchecked. Would fit nicely with the canon, I think.

Eh, if I recall correctly, that actually became something of a plot point later on, with Nyx freaking out because she thought that Twilight had been brainwashing her, though the fact of the matter was that she was essentially a near-newborn and aged rather quickly, to the point that she was physically an adult before the story ended. Taken from that perspective, it isn't unnatural for her to derive a good deal of her values from Twilight, who was basically her only caregiver. She just plain didn't have time to develop her own identity and beliefs, and when you throw in the mess with her having NMM's memories...


Of course, I last read it quite some time ago, so some of my facts might be wrong/muddled.

Summary: NMM is a fork of luna, caused by her alicorn magic. What the EOH ray did was to restore the last functioning backup and boot her into safe mode, with minimal powers.
