But that can be traced down family trees and what not, I think the only time you see AJ's parents is in the sonic rainboom ep....

It could also be determined what race it is by diet or other factors such as magic and emotions.

As far as we know, genetics could determine the grandchildrens' kind, then the parents determine their grandchildren, and so forth.

If unicorn genes require both of parents to contribute only the recessive genes, then how could the twins be of a different type? Please tell me how wrong I am.

Hmmmm... After some checking, it appears the outcompeting by the Unicorns wouldn't be so bad, though would be far from unnoticable.
