Never even heard of or seen that until now.

I'd imagine that a pony introduced to meat-happy human culture would probably start eating meat just because, it isn't dangerous to them or anything, just less efficient to digest than vegetables and fruit. They'd probably readily switch back to vegetarianism once they got back to Equestria, though, considering they don't have any nonsapient animals to kill.

Technically, little critters like rabbits and what-not are non-sapient. Ya know, like dogs/cats...

And yea, meat is generally cheaper and more convenient... but... ponies can eat grass. Plenty of that around, may be low quality/bland though... at least they can't starve, unless they are playing hobo in a wasteland or city.
Convenience can be off-set pretty easily though... if the Ponies find that they can't stomach eating a carnivore's diet. Which I suspect will be many who will go out of their way to get their vegan foods. At least some will take to the diet/convenience.

All the creatures in Equestria seem to demonstrate some level of sapience, actually. I think the only excuse that a pony could even make for killing some other animal is 'he was about to kill me'. Or, you know, a legitimately carnivorous creature was starving. (You've got to wonder which animal Fluttershy would support in that case...) That said, I wonder what hydra meat tastes like...
