Pattern game, anyone? ;)
So, does anyone want to play the Pattern Game?
The basis of the game is to reveal the pattern, a condition or rule invented by the GM.
[If you've ever played the knife game, that evil, demented game of simplistic observation; that's what this is derived from. This game usually operates better F2F, but it shouldn't really matter]
The game has four parts; The Pattern, The Question, The Items, and The Player
The Pattern : The condition or rule invented by the GM.
The Question : The definitive question posed by the GM.
The Items : The recurring items that The Pattern operates upon, from which The Player must divine The Pattern.
The Player : You.
[You may be wondering, "Why am I a part of the game, but the GM isn't?" That is because while The Pattern can be dependent on The Player (see below), while it may not depend on the GM]
ITEMS :: Items have a few rules applied to them, from a creation standpoint, that you may exploit in order to solve Patterns.
1- Items come in groups called Sets.
2- All Sets must be represented in the initial Question, as well as every subsequent Question.
3- The Answers given by the Player, as well as the order in which they were given, are a persistent Set in every question, and is thus a viable conition for the Pattern.
4- All Items in each set, excluding answers, need to be represented within a number of turns equal to the number of items in the largest set times two. Ex.- If there is a Question with two sets, one with 2 options, and one with 5, all items of all sets must have been present in a question by the 10'th turn.
The game proceeds in repeating rounds, going through phases;
[# - Phase : Example]
1 - Question : A firefighter, a policeman, and a doctor are in a room. Who wore the coat?
The initialization for the game; once you play it enough, you will dread any question phrased this way, and simply stare down your friend, who is by this time grinning like a fool for establishing himself as the GM by initializing the game. The Question phase presents The Items [which almost always come in sets of three] and The Question, the answer to which is determined by The Pattern, left unsaid until The Player guesses it or surrenders.
2 - Answer : The policeman?
The Player's response to The Question; the first round is always a shot in the dark, collection of data.
3 - Reveal : No, it is the doctor.
The GM's response to The Player's guess, conditionally yes or no. [I'm not sure how you could manage to get a 'maybe', but if you're even tempted to answer that, your Pattern is void, and The Player wins automatically] If no, the GM reveals the correct answer to the Question phase.
4 - Repeat
At any point, once per round, The Player may try to guess The Pattern. If he guesses The Pattern correct [or at lest 87.5% so, but honestly that's up to the GM] The Player wins, and the game is over; usually the GM and Player switch off at this point. If The Player guesses wrong, the GM informs him of his stupidity and the round continues.

~~{ I am currently writing up official rules and restrictions for creating Patterns, but for now I will simply provide a few and act GM }~~
~~{ Usually this game is 1v1, but I doubt it will matter if the forum collectively plays the first few rounds. Have at it! }~~
~{ When replying, include the game number, please; to reduce confusion. }~

- #000 ::
#001 :: The Pope, a director, and a driving instructor are in a room. Who has the knife?- Sean Mirrsen:
- The pattern for 001 so far is that a correct answer cannot be given. The correct answer is always the character previous to the one given as the answer, with wraparound. I.e. if the three characters are labelled 1, 2 and 3 as they are presented in the Question, then if the Player answers 2, the correct is 1, if the answer is 1 the correct is 3, and if the answer is 3 the correct is 2.
#002 :: A butcher and a pig are sitting on a pier, eating celery. Which one is vegetarian?#003 :: A green, red, and blue balloon are tied to a post. Which one pops first?- acidbomb113:
- If Blue is chosen, Answer is Blue - Else Answer is Red
#004 :: If a tree sneezes in the forest, does the giant hear it?#005 :: A mathematician, a priest, and a dancer are wearing red, blue, and green, respectively. Who brought the booze?- Necro910:
- #005: The pattern is the red one, with the priest being unable to purchase the booze.
#006 :: You have a squirtle, a charmander, and a bulbasaur at your slumber party; the charmander is very sleepy. Which pokemon will stay up latest?- #007 :: D :: A Ninja and a Pirate are fighting over a piece of pie. Who wins?
- #008 :: C :: There are two doors, one red, one green. Which one leads to eternal glory?
- #009 :: B :: If Twilight is best pony, which pony is shipped with her? (Only includes mane six)

The director?
The pope would have one for self-protection, the director would have one for the set, the driving instructor doesn't have a realistic reason. Knowing you guys, it may as well be the tomato silently watching in the background.

The driving instructor would need a knife to stab his students out of sheer frustration.

Re-read the last section, I added a few bits ~ namely the game number.

I revealed; back to the Question phase :: It's the same question (usually, depending on the Pattern), re-asked, slightly different. Everything you need to find the Pattern is in the Question phase, every time it's asked.acidbomb113 wrote:@ Necro - No, it is the Pope.

[USUALLEE (( )) the difference is in the way the Items "the Pope", "a director", and "a driving instructor", are presented]

#001 :: If the second space contains the director, then the first holds the knife; however, if the driving instructor occupies the second space, then the third one holds the knife. Am I correct?
Also, just for future reference, will whomever guesses the pattern form the next rule? Or will we have some kind of rotation?

Re: Pattern game, anyone? ;)
@ Embers - No, I'm not going to use nor allow double rules, as it's hard to put a true 'limit'; thus I'm resolving to use basically an If:else: format.
As to the winner, I was just going to run a few forum-wide games as the GM (you can if you'd like, but don't make the Pattern too difficult), then turn the thread over to the community, using the Question # to facilitate 1v1's, the way the game is meant to be played.
At that point I'll probably take a back seat as 'Rule Guru', OK'ing Patterns for use n' such.
No, your rule is incorrect.
Question stands ~

Sorray ~
Didn't go into detail with Items yet, didn't think I would need to ~
#002 uses 2 Item sets.
You can use multiple Item Sets for advanced questions, but one of them has to be the 'Accusative' Set; the one that is chosen from to answer the question [In this case, the butcher and the pig]
This puzzle uses a second set, 'Setting', a type of Conditional Set ~ don't be fooled though, just because it's a 'Conditional' Set, doesn't mean it determines anything; it merely means that it has lacks the ability to be the subject of the question. [or 'Accused', if you were wondering where that came from]
[/latin also]
@ Necro - Yes, the Red popped first.

What is the setting in this case of the question? "Sitting on a pier"? "Eating celery?" Or is it "sitting on a pier, eating celery"? Is the last sentence (the question itself, in this case "Which one is vegetarian?") allowed to change?acidbomb113 wrote:Sorray ~
