A rather neat one, too. We were actually considering one back when we were choosing a car. I'm seeing some odd behavior the main categories are still showing 'new activity' but none of the individual boards are.
Re: Random non sequitur posts thread
That seems a common occurrence; just a glitch in the interface, you'll be fine.

Korpiklaani and Kekkaishi are forever linked in my mind because I binge-listened to the former while binge-reading the latter. Now, whenever I hear certain songs of theirs, it evokes memories of specific parts of the story.

Re: Random non sequitur posts thread
I've noticed that when we forum members make posts using pony emoticons, we tend to stick to using the same character throughout the post. I find that interesting. I like it though. Not sure why I like it. That is also interesting. To me at least. Maybe it adds consistency to the "voice" of the post? Or something?

Re: Random non sequitur posts thread
A lot of the posters do that on purpose. I'll generally use just one during the post, so it looks like I do it too. I also like certain emoticons better than others

Re: Random non sequitur posts thread
As long as it's Twilight, Fluttershy, Rainbow or Rarity, the diversity of available smilies allows to have this sort of "in-character monologue".
Basically, it sets the tone of the post better than if you were using a random selection of emoticons. Although that doesn't seem to stop some people.
However, if you have some kind of mid-post discussion or want to convey several ideas, it's actually better to use several smiley sets.
(as long as you don't go overboard with them )
It allows to separate logical pieces of your argument without additional markup, and adds flavor to the post. Some of us here are pretty good roleplayers.
In addition, since the characters have established personalities, it sometimes simply feels appropriate to use one smiley set instead of another.
When I'm posting about my art or other creative work, I tend to use Rarity more often, because she represents what I'm posting about better. When I'm providing intelligent insight on something, or simply being a smartass like here, I use Twilight.
Er, no offence, Twi.

Also, you can represent two sides of an argument with different sets.

I got 7%. Also, why can't I see the forum statistics page? It says I have no rights to see it.

The 'forum statistics' page is admin-only by default. Basically, it's just the total number of posts and topics, posts, users, and topics per day, and a GoogleMaps plugin which shows the locations of anyone who is online and has added their location.
It also shows a list of everyone currently online, what they are currently viewing, and the IP address they're connecting from. That, and the map, are why it is going to stay admin only.

Re: Random non sequitur posts thread
I can already see the who's online list, and the map. The statistics page is a separate thing, and it's very useful for satisfying random curiosity and planning games and stuff. IP addresses are only visible to admins anyway.Flying Dice wrote:Sean Mirrsen wrote:I got 7%. Also, why can't I see the forum statistics page? It says I have no rights to see it.

It doesn't actually display your address, to non-admins at least, all you can see is the general location. Well, probably accurate to google maps standards, but the map itself ain't very detailed.Necro910 wrote:Flying Dice wrote:Sean Mirrsen wrote:I got 7%. Also, why can't I see the forum statistics page? Re: Random non sequitur posts thread
I don't know what you're so worried about, Necro. If you didn't add your location to your profile, then it won't be displayed either. At least, that's what I gather from FD's post. So, really now, what's the big deal?
Edit: Seems there is no such option. That makes FD's post rather confusing.

Re: Random non sequitur posts thread
It uses the IP rather than the forum profile location thing, because you can see the guest users' locations as well. Naturally, it doesn't do pinpoint locating. For me the tag is smack dab in the middle of nowhere. For Necro910, it's somewhere southeast of LA. Quite in the middle of nowhere as well, but no further than 400m from nearest civilization.

Re: Random non sequitur posts thread
Ah, I see. I wonder where it points for me. I'm the only fanfic mod (so, really, not much of a mod), but I can't see the map. All I know is that whenever I get any location-based ads, it always thinks I live in Hamburg which is not at all true.Sean Mirrsen wrote:It uses the IP rather than the forum profile location thing, because you can see the guest users' locations as well. I don't care whether you people here know what town I live in, so just post where it points because I'm really curious.

Ah, that's right. It has been a long time since I was curious and poking around in there. What was confusing me is that there is a checkbox for who is allowed to view the statistics online.
Incidentally, Necro is somewhere near the SW coast of California.

Re: Random non sequitur posts thread
It's in Lubeck for you, MCD. Just a hundred kilometers northeast of Hamburg. That's probably where your ISP is located, if it's not where you live. The pin's pointing at a specific house though, so who knows.

Huh, that is actually where I live. It's still a 210k town, so I'm not too worried that any of you would find me, even if you do know my first name. It's different for people who live in, say, villages of 300 people.Sean Mirrsen wrote:It's in Lubeck for you, MCD. Just a hundred kilometers northeast of Hamburg.
I'd rather you didn't say what house it points to, though, because that's really too much information to post publicly on the internet.

The one on the left! With the yellow brick and the green door!
Now watch that be correct so it looks like I'm streetview stalking instead of guessing wildly.

Eeyup. GoogleMaps streetview shows a picture of my house from before I lived here, so it'll be even harder to find meFlying Dice wrote:Ah, that's right. And now my "I hate where I am" rant: It's always warm, it's never cold here. I love the cold of European countries, not this Savannah-near-the-ocean climate. All the pavement here is cracked from the dry heat. As a bonus, half the people are illegals and their children, the other half is stoners. All of them don't understand anyone else's views, so anything other than "LOL school is 4 nerds. U r need workout ERRYDAY 2 b cool" is completely foreign to them. Even the generic fat ones act like this so when I say "I don't care", they freak out, even when it compliments them. People here throw out threats, but can't throw or take a punch for shit. They all disregard education and basically anything with class. This is probably why I became a misanthrope.
