Tabletop RPG
I was thinking of running a Tabletop RPG on IRC, but with nice simple rules.
It uses RTD rules, because I like simplicity. For the uniformed, RTD works like this. 1 = Dramatic Failure (Causes long-term failure) 2 = Failure (Doesn't happen) 3 = Meager Success (Works just as you planned, nothing more) 4 = Success (Worked real well) 5 = Amazing Success (Causes long-term success) 6 = overshoot (Fails as badly as 1)
Now, that's obviously not exciting in the slightest. Now, what is exciting? You decide everything! The setting, the characters you play (Yes, you can play Rainbow Dash anywhere, if you want) and the very premise (Edit: Originally plot. It's a bit boring if it's just you dictating everything, isn't it? Not a dictator ) is at your disposal! I simply work with what I have to create an interesting game for you. It works fairly well (Tested with parents) and I think it might be a fun thing to do.
Now, I'd prefer a small number of players, but I'd be happy to cater to anyone's needs. So, who is up for this?

I would very much like to join, but on IRC I'd have to match times with all you other-side-of-the-globe people. Once you decide on session time, I'll see if I can fit into your schedule.

I'd love to, but IRC doesn't work for me. I'm very interested if you run it here on the forums thou!

I'll only play if you do it in a forum. I don't know the benefits of doing it live (other than speed), but I don't want to go through the hassle of setting up whatever programs we're using along with actually being there on time.

Re: Tabletop RPG
Only one program needed, all the dice rolling is on me. It's a hell of a lot better on IRC then a forum. Forum RPGs... don't really work that well, in my experience.

Re: Tabletop RPG
Forum RPG's move pretty slowly compared to IRC and similar setups. I'm more comfortable with the slower pace, myself, but I'd gladly experiment with a quicker game.
Also, you don't even need to install a program - you could use the ChatZilla addon if you have Firefox.

If ya'll are in need of a game client, some of my friends have been developing one for a while. It's mostly stable.

I'm not entirely sure on google documents. It's good for writing collabs, but for RP? Not sure on it. A game client, though...

Re: Tabletop RPG
Even if it's a game with ponies though, wouldn't a game environment that's "mostly stable" be kinda dull?

Guess I didn't wait long enough for anybody to actually read it. Oh, well, so much for that stupid prank.

I meant it won't crash. Most likely.

Re: Tabletop RPG
That thing still requires downloading, and simultaneous connection. Sure, Docs isn't the best for keeping track of who said what but in every other measure of practicality it beats it with huge margin.
Wherever we chose, it looks like it pretty much has to be browser based.

Re: Tabletop RPG
Out of personal preference, I would suggest Skype. It's not just for voice comms, it's also got a fairly neat chat-conference system, which keeps a log of who said what when, as well as (I think) relays the messages to recipients that have been offline while the messages were sent.
And ChatZilla is as close to browser-based as you can get without it actually being browser-based.
Since we won't be having actual maps, using an actual browser-based virtual tabletop is going to be overkill.

Re: Tabletop RPG
I actually though skype at first to, but experience has shown it not very good for roleplaying, and also that fniff in particular is not on it with enough regularity. But yea, Skype works for me.

Re: Tabletop RPG
Heh, I've learned that through experience too. I still have the remains of a conversation we've had logged here, one of us randomly dropped out (can't say for sure if it was me or him) and that was the last time I've seen him online, October 24th.Armok wrote:...experience has shown... ...that fniff in particular is not on it with enough regularity.

Yes, I'm pretty terrible for it, but I guarantee you it was because of circumstance.
Or I got bored of the conversation.

Me, too!
Although I'd definitely prefer using the forum instead of IRC. Getting everyone online at the same time is pretty much impossible (most people live all over America, Sean is Russian, I'm German) which is a non-issue in a forum RPG.

Speaking of that boring conversation, by the way, are we going to be doing anything at all about this fic we've been cooking up?Fniff wrote:Yes, I'm pretty terrible for it, but I guarantee you it was because of circumstance.

Re: Tabletop RPG
Forum RP all the way. The time difference is a major issue for a chat-contained roleplay, especially since everyone would need to be on at once. It's just much simpler to make another thread for the IC on the forums and make the magic happen in there. Requires a little more patience, but it's less hassle for everyone.
